Be the voice of your community

  • Geoff Parker Quote

A series of events are taking place across Leicestershire and Rutland for people interested in becoming a councillor in next year’s local elections.

Voters will head to the polls in all seven districts of Leicestershire and in Rutland for the local council elections on May 2, 2019.

Four events are planned to showcase what being a councillor is all about with the first being held in Blaby District Council in Narborough on Saturday, October 27.

The events are being promoted by a joint campaign between Blaby, Charnwood,  Hinckley and Bosworth, Melton, North West Leicestershire, and Oadby and Wigston district and borough councils and Rutland County Council.

Be the Voice of Your Community aims to highlight the responsibilities and challenges of representing people in your communities.

Geoff Parker, Returning Officer for Charnwood Borough Council and speaking on behalf of all the participating Councils, said: “Local councils in Leicestershire and Rutland deliver hugely important services which affect the lives of people every day.

“Being a councillor means you can play a part in shaping those services and make a difference to people’s lives.

“It’s also about representing residents’ views on a variety of issues and being a real voice for the community.

“I would encourage people to attend one of the events being held to find out more about being a councillor.”

Be the Voice of Your Community is part of a nationwide initiative to encourage potential community leaders in standing as a councillor.

The events are designed to help people find out what it takes to become a local councillor and will cover the nomination process and standing for election, the role of a councillor and what support is available, including allowances and training.

The event in Blaby is open to anyone across Leicestershire and Rutland. The other three are more for people in those areas but are open to anyone who is interested.
