Projects awarded over £20,000 in grant funding

Groups in Charnwood have been awarded £22,500 to support local projects.

In the latest round of grant applications for 2019-20, Charnwood Borough Council awarded funding to several community groups.

Falcon Support Services was awarded £10,000 towards a project which will support sex workers in the local area. The pilot scheme will run three drop-in sessions a week where people are able to seek support and advice. The grant from the Council will help to fund one session per week.

Age UK Leicester and Rutland was granted £3,500 for the Men and Women in Sheds project which aims to tackle isolation amongst older people in the borough. The Shed is where people come together and engage in activities such as carpentry, metal work, repairs, crafts and gardening.

Fibromyalgia Friends Together Leicestershire, a Charnwood based group which hold monthly meetings to support people with fibromyalgia was awarded £2,200. The funding will be used to help develop their activities further.

Other grants awarded included:

  • £1,500 to Seagrave War Memorial Hall towards the installation of LED lighting
  • £1,600 to TS Sabre and TS Cutlass Navy Cadet Force towards First Aid training and kit
  • £1,200 to Birstall Methodist Lunch Club towards running costs
  • £2,500 to Leicestershire and Rutland Ornithological Society towards the Watermead Wet Reed Bed project

Cllr Deborah Taylor, the borough Council’s lead member for communities said: “I’m really pleased we’ve been able to support such a wide range of projects during the latest round of the Council’s grant scheme.

“We’re committed to helping our local communities develop and these groups and organisations offer activities which help tackle a number of issues faced by residents.

“I’d encourage any groups in the borough who need support with their projects to take a look at what’s on offer and consider applying for a grant in the next round.”

The deadlines for the next round of grants are:

Loughborough community grant, deadline July 16, 2019 - The grant can provide up to £2,000 for voluntary sector and community organisations and projects, which deliver activities with community benefits in Loughborough. These grants can cover running costs (for up to one year) or one-off equipment costs.

Community Development and Engagement Grant, deadline, August 1, 2019- The grant is open for any organisation working in Charnwood and can provide up to £10,000 towards running costs and one-off equipment costs.

Community Facilities and Feasibility Grant, deadline, August 1, 2019 – The grant can provide a maximum of £20,000, up to a maximum of 50% of the cost of a project which assists with the renovation, improvement and provision of community buildings, and small-scale environmental improvement schemes. Feasibility studies grants awards grants of up to £5,000, to a maximum of 50% of the cost of feasibility studies as part of the development plan to undertake substantial refurbishment or propose a new-build community facility.
