Cllr Jane Hunt has been appointed to Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet as lead member for planning, inward investment and tourism strategy, following the resignation of Cllr Eric Vardy.
Cllr Vardy, who is moving away from the area, said he had thoroughly enjoyed his time on the Council and serving the people of Syston West ward. A by-election for the ward has now been called.
Cllr Jonathan Morgan, leader of the Council, said: “I would like to thank Eric for his service in a number of senior roles at the Council over the years and he will be missed.
“However, I am pleased to announce that Cllr Hunt is now the lead member for planning and I wish her well in her new role.”
Cllr Roy Rollings, lead member for transformation, has taken over responsibility for issues relating to environment strategy and carbon reduction.
Cllr Morgan has also appointed three new Council champions. Cllr Julian Howe will champion the Council’s commitment to plant thousands of trees over the next few years and Cllr Ted Parton is the Council’s new champion for loneliness, ensuring issues such as isolation and loneliness remain high on the Council agenda.
Cllr Laurie Needham is the Council’s new champion for climate change.
The notice of election for the Syston West ward has been published. Nominations must be submitted by 4pm on September 6. Should the seat be contested, a by-election will take place on Thursday October 3. More information is available at www.charnwood.gov.uk/forthcoming_elections.
