Get active this summer with online activities

A virtual activity timetable will help families in Charnwood stay active this summer.

The borough council’s Active Charnwood team has worked with partners to put together a six-week timetable of online activities as an alternative to its usual summer holiday programme.

The timetable which will go live on Monday July 13 includes a range of sessions for families to do at home including a daily challenge from Leicestershire Rutland Sport, love family fit with Tayplay, football skills with Leicester City Football Club and dance with Bhangra Fusion.

There will also be resources and activity ideas for people to do in their own time throughout the six-week holiday including den building, orienteering, cycling, multi-sports, tennis and running.

Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member for community support and equalities said: “Our holiday activity programmes always prove popular but due to the current pandemic the team are unable to deliver face-to-face sessions. Therefore, we have put together a virtual timetable so families can stay active while remaining safe.

“The team has worked with partners to put together the six-week programme which includes arts and crafts, cricket and martial arts. I’d encourage parents with children at home to have a look at the timetable and get involved with the activities on offer.

“Making sure we all stay active during this difficult time plays an important role in keeping both our bodies and minds healthy.”

Most of the activities will be free but there is a small charge for some of the sessions offered by external providers.

The timetable for the virtual programme will be shared across the Active Charnwood’s social media channels and more information can be found on the Active Charnwood Alliance website.

Organisations involved in the six-week virtual programme include Leicestershire Rutland Sport, Leicester City Football Club, Leicestershire County Cricket Club, Tayplay, Blue Wave, Bhangra Fusion, b-buddies, Shelthorpe Golf Academy, GSM Tennis Coaching and The Creation Station.
