Charnwood offers help for owners of empty homes

Published: Mon 15th February, 2021

Owners of empty homes in Charnwood are being encouraged to bring them back into use with support from Charnwood Borough Council.

The Council helps get empty homes back into use by offering advice and support on what is best for the owner including finding tenants and getting access to discounted selling fees with local agents and auctioneers.

The borough council is calling on owners of empty homes in the borough to look at the support and funding available including partnership grants which can help to part-fund refurbishments and get properties back on the rental market.

The partnership grant can help to fund renovation works and will cover 50 per cent of the cost of the work – up to a maximum of £15,000. In return, the Council nominate people in housing need to become tenants for these renovated properties.

The call marks Empty Homes Week which is a chance for local authorities, housing providers, community-led organisations and others to share information about the work they do to tackle empty homes.

Cllr Paul Mercer, lead member for private housing said: “The Council is committed to getting empty homes back into use and one of the ways we can do this is through the Partnerships Grant scheme to part-fund renovations.

“In Empty Homes Week 2021, we want to reach out to owners of empty properties to let them know support and funding is available.

“Getting empty properties back into use not only helps ease the pressure of the local housing market, but it ensures they do not become a burden on the local community.

“If you own an empty property in Charnwood and are unsure on what to do with it, please ring the Empty Homes Officer and find out how the Council may be able to help getting it back into use.”

There are more than 400 empty homes in Charnwood and the Council has helped get 219 properties back into use since April 2016.
