Support your local shops online and shop safe

Published: Fri 19th March, 2021

Residents are being encouraged to support their local shops on a website which features local high street businesses in Charnwood as well as promoting Covid-19 safety measures.

The Shop Safe, Shop Local in Charnwood website, commissioned by Charnwood Borough Council, continues to grow and be used by local businesses and shoppers.

The site shoplocal.charnwood.gov.uk offers residents the opportunity to support their local businesses from home and shop safely using delivery or click and collect options.

So far, over 30 local businesses are live on the site either as a shop or with a link through to their website. From arts and crafts, wonderful homemade gifts, home and fashion, delicious food and drink and more, you can browse for your local favourites and buy all from one site.

Cllr Shona Rattray, lead member for business support, said: “I am really pleased to see that local businesses and shoppers are using the online shopping site. I would encourage everyone to take a look to see what it has to offer and how easy it is to support local businesses online.

“It is important to boost local trade, especially through these difficult times and the shopping site is a great way to support businesses safely while many are still closed to the public due to Covid restrictions.”

The Nook Corner in Anstey

Sharon Pole runs the Nook Corner café in Anstey, one of the many local businesses which have diversified during the pandemic.

She said: “None of us could ever have imagined the effect Covid-19 would have had on us either personally or from a business perspective this time last year. But Nook Corner has always risen to a challenge, none more so than the difficulties we have faced since March 2020.

“We have adapted to become Covid compliant and tried to increase sales by pursuing different approaches. Aiming to be more diverse we plan to arrange many more event evenings when we reopen to the public.

“However, the main thing lockdown has taught us is the change in customer habits, this time last year we wouldn’t have been offering Mother’s Day afternoon teas for collection and delivery. We solely advertised this through social media and the through our link on the Charnwood Shop Local site and we were inundated with requests.

“We are so grateful to our customers for their continued support and can’t wait to welcome everyone back fully to help us celebrate our 10th anniversary in Anstey.”

The campaign is being backed by Love Loughborough which has its own e-commerce site featuring Loughborough based businesses: shop.loveloughborough.co.uk

The Shop Safe, Shop Local campaign is funded thanks to the Reopening High Streets Safely Fund which is support by the European Regional Development Fund.
