A dragon boat racing club is one of the newest causes being supported by Charnwood Community Lottery.
Soaring Dragons, based in Loughborough, have joined lottery to help buy essential equipment as the popular club continues to expand.
It means there are now 58 good causes being supported by Charnwood Community Lottery which was launched by the Council in 2018. So far, over £66,000 has been raised for causes across Charnwood from 134,000 tickets bought.
Over £21,000 has now been won by players across Charnwood since the lottery was founded.
Soaring Dragons was founded in 2016 and have grown ever stronger, offering members of the community a chance to learn a new skill and meet new people.
They are based at Loughborough Boat Club in Hathern, training down the River Soar twice a week and compete on both a local and national level, reaching the National Cup Finals in 2016.
Paul Freemantle, fundraising officer at Soaring Dragons, said: “Here at Soaring Dragons, community is important to us, and we are always happy to welcome new people to join us.
“The Charnwood Community Lottery offers residents a chance of supporting so many great causes across the borough.
“It can be a vital way of fundraising for different causes, and it helps us with equipment to allow members to continue to grow and improve.
“Soaring Dragons is open to everyone and is a great place to meet new people, exercise and learn a new skill.”
The club has 43 members and are continuing to grow year on year. They are open to anyone to join from beginners to seasoned paddlers.
Members take part in the four dragon boats with the Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Paul Baines, attending the ‘dotting ceremony’ at the launch of their newest racing boat in July 2021.
Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member for communities, said: “Soaring Dragons is a fantastic example on how the Charnwood Community Lottery can help a local organisation and local people.
“Every time that someone buys a ticket, they are instantly helping good causes and clearly there’s also a chance of winning a prize.
