The new Mayor of Charnwood says she is proud to represent the borough after being sworn in at a Council meeting.
Cllr Jennifer Tillotson, was voted in as the borough‘s first citizen at the Council’s Annual Meeting on Monday May 23.
Cllr Tillotson will be representing the borough at hundreds of events over the next year with her consort, husband Mr John Tillotson.
The Mayor said: “It is a hugely proud moment for myself and my family to be chosen to represent this fantastic borough.
“I look forward to meeting so many new people over the next 12 months to see the hard work that they are doing in the community. Hopefully we can make a positive difference across Charnwood.”
Cllr Tillotson grew up in Lancashire before moving to Loughborough with her husband John in 1976.
When moving to Charnwood, Cllr Tillotson took the opportunity to go back into education, attaining A levels then a degree at Leicester Polytechnic which is now known as De Montfort University.
Cllr Tillotson then went on to work for Leicester City Council for 20 years in a variety of roles before retirement. She has served as a borough councillor since 2015.
In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, cycling and sewing.
Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People in Loughborough has been chosen to be the Mayor’s charity for 2022-23. The charity supports children and young people who has confirmed life-limiting or life-threatening conditions.
The appointment of Cllr Tillotson sees the end of the Mayoral year for Cllr Paul Baines.
Cllr Baines said: “It has been a great honour to serve Charnwood as Mayor over the past 12 months.
“I have had the pleasure of attending many events throughout the year as we saw Covid restrictions being lifted and it was fantastic to be able to get out and meet people who do so much for the community.
“I would like to say thank you to those who have donated to my charities Living Without Abuse and Marie Curie.
“Finally, I would like to wish Cllr Tillotson all the best as the next Mayor of Charnwood. I am sure she will do a great job.”
Cllr Margaret Smidowicz has been elected Deputy Mayor and will be supported by her consort, son-in-law Mr Timothy Baum.
