Cemetery Consultation Allendale Road V2 001

The consultation has now closed.

Allendale Road is the first of the three viable options for a new cemetery in Loughborough.

Details about Allendale Road:

  • 2.9 hectare site
  • 1.4 hectares would be used for a cemetery excluding parking
  • the rest of the site would be used for recreation and parking.
  • provide burial spaces for 42 years (approx. 2,500)
  • cost to get up and running and for one hectare: £400,000 approx

The site is close to the existing cemetery and could be operated as a satellite facility with no need for significant buildings/storage.

Access could be off the A6 and there is established tree planting to the north and western borders of the site providing effective screening to residential properties.

When planning permission was granted for the surrounding housing the Section 106 agreement referred to the land as “recreational land”.

While some developers did use marketing indicating the land was going to be used for sports pitches, the 106 Agreement does not restrict its use to sports pitches.

There is a covenant on the land. Part 1 of title LT493040 states: “Not at any time to use or permit or suffer to be used the sports field for any use or purpose other than for non-commercial sports and recreational uses and purposes”.

While there is a covenant on the land, it does not rule out considering this land as a possible site for the cemetery.

The Council recognises residents moving to the area would have believed the land was going to be used for sports pitches. However, the reality of the situation is that the town needs burial spaces in the near future and due to the lack of other viable options, this site needs to be considered.

Maintenance of the site is already covered by the Council’s landscaping contract (idverde).

Parking would be provided on site and would be located close to the main access point to ensure vehicles are not directed into the estate.
