Below are more details about what is being proposed under the Bedford Square Gateway Project.

Bedford Square

In summary, the proposals for Bedford Square are to:Bedford Square

  • widen footpaths
  • add a raised table for a crossing and to reduce traffic speed
  • add a gateway feature at the entrance to Ward's End (not yet decided)
  • introduce three parking bays near the Post Office
  • create a new entrance to Bedford Square north parking area with an entry and exit on Woodgate (instead of the current entrance/exit on Ward’s End)
  • create a new entry/exit for the Bedford Square south car park
  • add new ‘character’ street lighting
  • add new street furniture and planting (removable for events ie Loughborough Fair) 

Ward’s End

In summary, the proposals for Ward's End are to:Ward's End

  • widen footways to a minimum of three metres and up to five metres in places (currently two metres wide in places). This will improve pedestrian safety, accessibility and the shopping experience
  • add new pedestrian crossing points to improve safety and accessibility
  • add raised tables to reduce traffic speed
  • create larger parking bays.
  • narrow the road
  • create a loading bay in front of the Jam Garden pub
  • add new 'character' street lighting

Devonshire Square

In summary, the proposals for Devonshire Square are to:Devonshire Square

  • widen footpaths
  • create a large public open space all on one level for events, entertainment and the market
  • improve surface, lighting and pedestrian access to Granby Street Car Park via Devonshire Lane
  • create new pedestrian crossing points to improve safety and accessibility
  • add raised tables to reduce traffic speed
  • create larger parking bays, some of which will be designated as disabled spaces
  • create a loading bay 
  • add cycle parking facilities
  • add new street furniture and planting (removable for events ie Loughborough Fair)
