Here is a summary of the Bedford Square Gateway project.

Bedford Square

In summary, the proposals for Bedford Square are to:

  • widen footpaths
  • add a raised table for a crossing and to reduce traffic speed
  • add a gateway feature at the entrance to Ward's End (not yet decided)
  • create a new entrance to Bedford Square north parking area with an entry and exit on Woodgate (instead of the current entrance/exit on Ward’s End)
  • add new ‘character’ street lighting
  • add new street furniture and planting (removable for events i.e. Loughborough Fair)
  • In October 2021, it was agreed Loughborough Town Deal would contribute towards the project and therefore plans to include Bedford Square South Car Park (which had been dropped due to a lack of funding) were added back into the programme. High quality paving will be added around the car park from the post office to the junction with Southfield Road and a new car park entrance will be created in the road which links Southfields Road and Woodgate.

Ward’s End

In summary, the proposals for Ward's End are to:

  • widen footways to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility and the shopping experience
  • add new pedestrian crossing points to improve safety and accessibility
  • add raised tables to reduce traffic speed
  • create larger parking bays.
  • narrow the road width
  • create a loading bay in front of the Jam Garden pub
  • add new 'character' street lighting

Devonshire Square/Devonshire Lane

In summary, the proposals for Devonshire Square and Devonshire Lane are to:

  • widen footpaths
  • create a large public open space all on one level for events, entertainment and the market
  • improve surface, lighting and pedestrian access to Granby Street Car Park via Devonshire Lane
  • create new pedestrian crossing points to improve safety and accessibility
  • add raised tables to reduce traffic speed
  • create larger parking bays, some of which will be designated as disabled spaces
  • create a loading bay
  • add cycle parking facilities
  • add new street furniture and planting (removable for events i.e. Loughborough Fair)

Bedford Square South car park

In summary, the proposals for Bedford Square South car park are to:

  • add high-quality paving to the area around Bedford Square South Car Park and in front of the Ward’s End Post Office.
  • create a new entrance and exit on the road which links Woodgate and Southfield Road (this small road is actually called Bedford Square)

This phase of the scheme was added back into the programme at the end of 2021 thanks to the securing of funding from Loughborough Town Deal.
