All tenants in privately rented property have certain rights and responsibilities.

If you are struggling to pay your rent, contact Housing Benefits & Entitlements to see if there is any assistance that may be available to you.

Arrears and other debt advice can be found at:

Eviction from a private rented property

If you fall into arrears, your landlord may evict you from your home. Your landlord must follow a strict procedure if they want you to leave their property and they may be guilty of illegally evicting or harassing you if the correct eviction procedure is not followed.

Go to evictions for more information about the procedure landlords must follow when evicting tenants who have fallen into arrears and for more information about your rights and responsibilities go to our private renting page.

If you are struggling with any other debts contact the National DebtLine on 0844 248 0040 or the Bridge for advice on the rights of private tenants.
