Forward planning for growth is an ongoing task for local authorities but this year is particularly significant as we are putting together our new local plan.

This will guide development for homes, industry, green spaces and key infrastructure for many years to come. Our current local plan covers the period up until 2028 and the refreshed version will move that forward to 2036. Yes, it means more homes in the borough as there is a national housing shortage and we must play our part in delivering more homes for the nation. However, we are only planning for growth to meet the borough’s own need, no-one else’s.

When the draft plan is complete, there will be a full public consultation later this year and then revisions will be made. Your input into the process will be crucial as ever.

I’m delighted to say that to help support growth in the borough we have just held our very own film premiere. It wasn’t quite red carpet and films stars, but the launch of inCharnwood’s Be at the Centre of Innovation film to promote the borough to investors is a milestone for us. InCharnwood is our regeneration brand and we created it to make sure the borough is seen as not just a great place for business, but a fantastic one. Charnwood boasts a great location, a high-calibre workforce, great communities and a high standard of living. What more could a business need.

It rests with all of us to shout about Charnwood and you can help by viewing the video and sharing it on social media. Have a quick peek at www.incharnwood.com.

We’re just in the process of recruiting a new chief executive after current incumbent Geoff Parker announced his retirement recently. As I’ve said before, Geoff has been a fantastic servant to local government, and Charnwood in particular, and we wish him well.

It’s clearly a key role in the organisation and while we’re sad to see Geoff go, it’s also a time to look to the future, particularly as we’re also putting together our new corporate plan for 2020-24 and we are fresh into a new administration.

There will be opportunities to take and risks to navigate but we’re excited about the possibilities that lie before us. One thing I can assure you is that we will be working in collaboration with partners and residents to make Charnwood a better place for everyone.
