A 'Hackney Carriage' is any taxi which you can catch at a rank and hail in the street.
They are different to private hire taxis which must be pre-booked with an operator. Hackney vehicles are licensed for one year.
Hackney Carriage vehicles must display a white plate issued by us and they will have a roof sign. Hackney Carriage drivers will have a white ID badge which includes their photograph, which must be worn at all times.
You can view vehicle signage requirements here:
We issue licences for taxis and ensure that the vehicles are suitable and adequately insured to ensure high standards of safety. We also set the maximum fares that Hackney carriages may charge:
These tariffs should also be displayed inside the vehicle. We have no control over the fares set by private hire vehicles, this is a contract between the operator and the hirer.
Please read pages 16 – 26, Schedule 2 and Schedule 5 of the Hackney Carriage & Private Hire Licensing Policy for detailed information on the vehicle application process and all requirements and contact details for the testing stations.
