LOCAL PLAN INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Borough of Charnwood Local Plan 1991 – 2006, Adopted January 2004.

Photograph of Cameron MacLeodI would like to take this opportunity to introduce the Borough of Charnwood Local Plan which was formally adopted by the Council in January 2004. The Plan sets out the planning strategy for the Borough. Its policies will make a vital contribution to delivering the Council’s vision of a more sustainable Borough.

Charnwood lies at the heart of the East Midlands region close to the three main cities of Derby, Leicester and Nottingham. The Borough’s economic buoyancy, easy access to the national communications network and pleasant environment has made it an attractive location for further development. Making the necessary provision for new homes, jobs and other facilities can have a lasting effect on the character of the local area. This is why it is important to have a sound strategy to guide this change and make sure it is sustainable.

In preparing this Local Plan the Council has sought to balance the need to provide for the new homes and jobs that are needed with the protection of the best aspects of the Borough’s natural and man made environment.
