I’d like to start this blog by congratulating all councillors who were elected in the recent borough council elections.
Out of 52 Members, we have 11 new faces and I hope they are looking forward to the challenges ahead. I would advise our newcomers to dive into the training provided, listen (a lot) and if they need some advice, just ask one of the many wise heads who already have a few terms under their belt. Local government is complex, even more so when on the inside and there’s nothing wrong asking for help.
I was delighted to be re-elected as leader of the Council at a recent meeting and it continues to be an honour and a privilege to serve the borough. I have appointed Cabinet and it means we can now get on with delivering excellent services.
We will be developing our new corporate plan this year and this will guide our work for the next four years, setting out the Council’s aims and ambitions. It will include our manifesto pledges such as planting of 100,000 trees in the borough, continuing to invest in our tenants’ homes, and ensuring all our services are of the highest standards.
We will also be looking at how we can support our changing high streets. The retail sector is not the same anymore and we have to think differently to ensure our town centres remain vibrant. The Council has a key role to play in this.
Looking after the finances also remains a top priority as it gives us a solid platform to deliver our services from.
What will also remain in our focus is the need to put residents at the heart of everything we do.
We’re here to serve. Every Councillor knows that. And while we can’t always deliver everything people want, all 52 members, the Council’s staff and our partners will work hard each and every day to do the best for our borough.
Here’s to the future!
