Before you make any application for a new Combined Driver’s licence you must first pass the Knowledge Test.

The test has one paper and is split into the following three sections.  The pass mark for the test is 70% overall and you must obtain at least 50% on each section.  There will be a mixture of multiple choice, True and False Questions and written answers.

Geographical

In this section you will need to show that you know your way around the whole Borough of Charnwood and surrounding areas and places of public interest.

Law

In this section you will need to show that you have a good understanding of the Council's Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing policy and the Charnwood Borough Council - Bye-Laws Hackney Carriages.

Customer Care

In this section you will need to show that you have an understanding of the level of customer care that the Council expects you to deliver.

You will also need to demonstrate that you have the ability to read, understand and write in English as well as basic numeracy skills.

Everything you need to know is in our Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing policy and the Charnwood Borough Council - Bye-Laws Hackney Carriages.  We highly recommend that you leave yourself lots of time to study and also read the Knowledge Test Guidance Notes before taking your test.

You must also read our full Terms and Conditions before booking your test as they contain important information as to what to expect on the day of the test or what to do if you need to cancel for any reason.

Tests are held once a month at the Council Offices. You can book a test using our quick and simple online booking system.

As part of the booking process, (if you have not already done so,) you will be asked to create an account.  You will be asked for full payment at the time of booking.

You need an email address and a form of payment to make a successful booking.

Book a knowledge test

You will receive your results by email within five working days.

Once you pass you will be issued with a personalised certificate which is valid for two years. This will be sent to you in the post with a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) application form and DVLA Mandate form.

You have a maximum of three attempts to pass.

If you do not pass after three attempts you will not be allowed to sit any further tests for another 12 months, from the date of the most recent failure.
