Description

Training Workshops for Loughborough College. Commissioned by Herbert Schofield and built as the Technical College Instructional Factory. Original Greengates Close building completed 1918. Currently disused. Extension built 1938. The latter now a nursery and re-named ?Small World Centre?. Original Workshops, severe red brick with expressed piers, each 7th course recessed. 6 bays, 3 storeys. Saw-tooth pitched roof with slate tiles. Storey height metal casement fenestration to ground and 1st floors. Round head brick arch to main entrance with stone keystone and springers. Above arch, a built-up stone plaque ?Loughborough College 1918? (replacing original Instructional Factory plaque) - in the style of Mackintosh. 1938 flat roofed extension less distinguished to which ugly rendered 3rd storey added later.
