New contractor appointed to carry out Council home improvements

A new firm has been awarded a two-year contract to deliver improvements to council homes in Charnwood.

Jeakins Weir, an independent construction company has been awarded the contract by Charnwood Borough Council to deliver scheduled improvements to council-owned homes in the borough.

The contract will involve full and partial bathroom and kitchen replacements as part of the Council’s programme of planned improvements to its housing stock. It will also include external and internal structural works and refurbishments to empty properties.

The new contract came into place last year following a strict procurement process.

Cllr Colin Hamilton, the Council’s lead member for public and private housing welcomed the news. He said: “I am pleased to see this new contract in place as we continue to invest in our housing stock. The scheduled improvements will offer a better standard of living for our tenants.

“They will also be refurbishing empty Council properties to help get them back into use. I am looking forward to seeing Jeakins Weir deliver this contract to a high standard as well as showing care and compassion to Council tenants.”

The Council manages around 5,500 residential homes across Charnwood.

The two-year contract has potential to be extended for an additional two-years and has an estimated value of the initial period of £8 million.

Jeakins Weir is a family-owned businesses and was established in 1973. The Northamptonshire based company has expanded since it was founded over 50 years ago and operates throughout the Midlands.
