The Shepshed Town Centre Project will improve the public realms of Shepshed Town Centre.

The Council is working closely with the Shepshed Town Team, with support from Shepshed Town Council on the project which will cover improvements in Market Place, Bull Ring, Hall Croft and Field Street.

The scheme will be delivered in phases starting with Market Place which is planned to start in 2022.

The scheme has been informed by The Shepshed Town Centre Masterplan (2013) and will help make the areas more attractive for visitors and help boost trade of local shops and businesses. The project will see a range of improvements in the four areas to create a sense of place by showcasing the town's local history.

Existing pedestrian routes will be improved and the connectivity between Market Place, Hall Croft, Field Street and the Bull Ring will be made more accessible for pedestrians. The public space will also be made more attractive by installing new planters, trees and seating.

A large open space will be created for hosting the market and special events in Market Place and the pedestrian crossing on BrookeStreet will be relocated to provide a safer route to shops with increased parking provision in this area.

The scheme will see additional cycle parking, a new bus shelter in Bull Ring with a sedum roof to encourage biodiversity.

Barriers and directional signage on Field Street will be replaced at the entrance to Hall Croft with an archway to provide a distinct gateway into the area.

A total of £1.2 million funding has been allocated for the project from Charnwood Borough Council’s capital plan and additional funds secured through the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership.

The scheme has been designed in such a way for it to be implemented in a phased approach, according to the level of resources available and it's hoped worked will start in 2022. The proposed phasing and prioritisation of street works is as follows:

  • Market Place
  • Bull Ring
  • Hall Croft
  • Field Street

More information and a summary of the improvements for each area can be found on Shepshed Town Centre Project details page.

A consultation on the proposals was held between Friday September 18 and Monday October 19, 2020 to give local residents, businesses and visitors to Shepshed a chance to have their say on the project.

Council officers also held a virtual presentation on Thursday October 15, 2020 to give people the chance to find out more about the project and ask questions.

The borough Council listened to the range of comments made during the consultation in 2020 . A number of changes have been made to the proposed design for Market Place, including the provision of an additional five parking space, bring the total number of spaces up to 19, five more than currently in the area.
