Type of Funding

The grant is not available to normal business start ups. Funding to encourage the development of social enterprises. The definition of a social enterprise put simply is a business that fulfils a social rather than purely business aim. It does not mean that it cannot make a profit, but those profits need to be shared according to co-operative principals or put to community uses.

Who may apply?

Existing or new community based initiatives or organisations within the Borough of Charnwood including:

  • Community businesses
  • Co-operatives
  • LETS (Local Exchange trading Schemes)
  • Credit unions

What does the Grant Cover?

The grant can be used for any of the following types of expenditure:

  • Purchase of capital equipment
  • Premises expansion or re-location
  • Marketing
  • Training or development
  • Initial registration fees

What are the limits on the Funding?

Financial assistance up to a maximum of £1000 (including VAT) may be granted for eligible projects.

Amounts in excess of this figure may be considered appropriate subject to the approval of Charnwood Borough Council.

When can applications be made?

There is no closing date, applications will be accepted through the year.

What is the decision making process?

Most of these grants are set up in collaboration with the Leicester and County Co-operative Development Agency (now called CaSE-da)and we strongly recommend that you talk to them before making your application.
