Support and Advice for Older People

There are a number of support and advice services available to older people within Charnwood to assist them to remain in their homes.

Private Sector Housing

The Private Sector Housing Team at the Council provide a number of services to people living in private sector accommodation including:

  • Disabled Facilities Grants - for adaptations to enable people to remain in their homes and grants to assist with repairs and improvements to your home including energy efficiency measures
  • Assistance for people living in the private rented sector who have issues with disrepair.

Lifeline

Charnwood Neighbourhood Housing provide a lifeline service available to anyone living within the borough of Charnwood.

Leicestershire Handy Person Scheme

Leicestershire now has a handyperson scheme that can be accessed by residents of Charnwood. For more information please see the Leicestershire Handyperson page

Supporting People

If you are a current council tenant you may be entitled to support through the Council’s supporting people contract.

The Bridge offers free independent and confidential advice on all housing issues. We have two specialist services which may be of interest to you if you are in housing difficulties;

*The Housing Advice Service can advise on all housing issues, including rent and mortgage arrears, housing benefit problems, risk of homelessness, and housing options. We also have a Tenancy Relations Officer who can advise and advocate where there are Landlord and Tenant problems.

*The Tenancy Support Service works with people to enable them to gain the skills and knowledge to independently manage their own home. We may be able to help if the following situations relate to you:

- You have just been offered a tenancy and need support with the practicalities of moving in.

- You are an existing tenant who has problems with managing in your tenancy e.g. you have rent arrears, a lack of furniture, problems with your income, you are isolated and anything else that is affecting you related to your housing.

- You are waiting in temporary accommodation for permanent housing.

Age Uk were formed from the merger of Age Concern and Help the Aged. They provide information and advice on housing, health, debt and budgeting, bereavement, making a will and going into hospital.

Services include advocacy, befriending scheme, daybreak scheme, day care services, health advice and information, handyman service, respite service, advice on moving into residential and nursing homes, and services for people from minority ethnic communities.

Elderly Accommodation Counsel

The Elderly Accommodation Counsel (EAC) is a national charity that aims to help older people make informed choices about meeting their housing and care needs.

Meals on Wheels

The service provides meals to people who have been assessed as needing this support. A meal is delivered to people’s home on the days that have been agreed. The meals are nutritious and can cater for specific dietary needs.
