Prepare for love, laughter and a touch of magic as Christchurch G&S Society perform Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operetta The Sorcerer.
The action is set in the village of Ploverleigh, where villagers are gathering to celebrate the engagement of Alexis Pointdextre – son of the baronet Sir Marmaduke – and Aline Sangazure, of suitably similar breeding. As they prepare to mark their engagement officially, Alexis reveals to Aline, his plan to ensure that love levels all ranks and classes. He has invited John Wellington Wells from a respected London firm of sorcerers, to brew a love potion which will be given to all the villagers at the forthcoming feast. On waking from their potion-induced sleep, the villagers fall in love with the first person they see and the result is a set of comical mismatches between the main characters. Alexis is delighted with the results at first but when Aline falls for another (after he persuaded her to take the potion too) he appeals to John Wellington Wells for help. Can the spell be broken and will order be restored?
The Sorcerer is at Iveshead School Theatre, Shepshed (formerly Hind Leys College), from Tuesday 7 to Saturday 11 November and tickets are on sale now. Performances are at 7.30pm Tuesday to Friday with a Saturday matinee only at 2.30pm. Tickets are £12 (£6 for children) and are available through society members or by calling Margaret on 01509 504376.
